| Back to School Basics
August usually means new school clothes, buying books and supplies, class schedules and a much busier day-to-day routine for most. For others it means thousands of students and teachers online at the same time using more bandwidth and upping spam filter settings. Whatever your scenario is, we would like to call to your attention to our school district services in Colorado: Email Vaulting, Professional Consulting Services, Fiber, Spam & Virus Filtering, and more.
An August highlight on Email Vaulting for School Districts and Educators:
Email is now the primary and most effective means of communication for school districts throughout the United States. Administrators, teachers, coaches and parents regularly communicate using email. Many school districts now send and receive millions of email messages each month.
School districts/K-12 institutions are now required to have secure and searchable email records. This is due to a convergence of regulatory changes throughout the United States. For school districts, it includes HIPAA compliance, state enacted Open Records Acts and the recent landmark changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. The new laws focus on electronically stored information, ESI (especially email). They effectively mandate accountability for handling and timely public access.
The quickly evolving regulatory climate has left many school district IT staffers with a substantial amount of homework. They have the daunting job of selecting the 'right' technology solution for their district and then scrambling to get addendums put into the annual budget. Once budgeted, the IT staff is tasked to implement the new technology, complete testing and provide guidance to others on day-to-day operational aspects.
With FRII's Professional Services team, we can now assist school districts with the implementation of Email Vaulting software and services with painless and seamless integration and support.

Terms:
In honor of August and back-to-school, our terms this month will all be A words*.
Anonymous FTP: Part of the Internet's appeal is the huge number of files available for download. Anonymous File Transfer Protocol (FTP) enables anyone to download files from a properly configured FTP server. This allows users without accounts to access files by entering the username anonymous, along with their email address as a password. Because anyone can access files that have been set up for anonymous FTP, Webmasters need to be careful to use it only for files meant for public consumption. ActiveX: This set of technologies from Microsoft provides tools for linking desktop applications to the World Wide Web. Using a variety of programming tools, (including Java, Visual Basic, and C++) developers can create interactive Web content. For instance, ActiveX technology can allow users to view Word and Excel documents directly in a browser.
ATM (asynchronous transfer mode): This standard packet-switching protocol for transmitting and receiving data uses uniform 53-byte cells. (Each cell has a 5-byte address header and 48 bytes of data.) These short, standardized cells can be processed through a digital ATM switch very quickly, allowing for data transmission speeds surpassing 600 mbps. ATM was designed to support multiple services, including voice, graphics, data, and full-motion video. It also allows telephone and cable TV companies to dynamically assign bandwidth to individual customers.
*Thank you to the CNet.com glossary for some of these definitions.
